Episode Breakdown
Kent joins Deputy Stubblefield during a routine patrol that quickly shifts from calm to chaotic. The first stop begins with a white light emitting from the rear of a pickup, which leads Stubblefield to speak with a woman returning home from the casino. She denies any drug or alcohol use, but her behavior raises concerns. She trembles, speaks quickly, and struggles to follow basic directions.
Deputy Stubblefield conducts simple sobriety checks beginning with a thirty second internal clock test. She estimates ten seconds both times. He then runs a walking test that she cannot complete, followed by an eye check that shows clear signs of stimulant influence. When questioned directly, she first denies ever using meth, then later admits she recently quit and last smoked it two days earlier. Stubblefield arrests her for DUI and arranges transport for a blood draw, explaining that her rapid movements, dilated pupils, tremors, and distorted time perception indicate methamphetamine impairment.
The deputy explains how stimulant use speeds up a person’s internal clock and heightens physical reactions, which fits the signs he observed. Her vehicle is inventoried and towed, and she is taken for testing and further evaluation.
As the night continues, Deputy Stubblefield stops another vehicle after discovering the registered owner has a suspended driver’s license. The man admits his suspension is from a DUI. He insists he has not been drinking, but an open shooter bottle is visible in the door. After more questioning and a breath test, he registers just below the legal limit. Stubblefield cites him for driving with a suspended license and open container violations and instructs a sober passenger to take his place behind the wheel.
The situation spirals when deputies check the passengers. One woman has a misdemeanor warrant and claims to be pregnant to avoid being handcuffed behind her back. Deputies allow her to use the restroom and treat her with care, but later learn she was not pregnant and was highly intoxicated. A second passenger also has a warrant. With two passengers going to jail, Stubblefield decides the driver must go as well for suspended driving and alcohol violations.
The car is towed and all three occupants are taken into custody. A relative arrives and explains she has been searching for the driver because he continues to make dangerous decisions. The deputies explain that rules exist to protect people and that consequences are part of adulthood. Kent closes the segment noting that the stop prevented three intoxicated individuals from driving and potentially harming others.
This episode shows how quickly routine traffic stops can escalate. It also highlights the importance of thorough investigations, careful observation of impairment, and deputies who remain calm, patient, and professional even when stories change, emotions rise, and truth comes out only under pressure.
